There was actually an article in the Diabetes magazine I get (I've got the kind where your body doesn't make any insulin. Not the "fat kind".) about how there was a guy who had his diabetes info tattooed over where his heart would be.
He was in a restaurant when he passed out from low blood sugar, and apparently the paramedics said if they hadn't found his tattoo, he could have died, because his blood glucose was that low.

I've always kind of thought about getting my info on me somewhere, since I can't be bothered to wear the bracelet.

I guess for it to be effective, you'd have to put it some place where you don't have any other tattoos, so it stands out.

My dad had his done some thirty odd years ago! He HATES it hence the reason he is anti ink.

Anyway back on topic, I think I am correct in as much as even if you have you have your blood type inked on your skin you will still be typed.

Will check with friendly QUALIFIED haematologist in a short while.

Also DNR will be ignored.

I know both my Grandad's have their blood types tattooed on their wrists from when they were in the Army/Navy. I think in that situation it's a good thing because its one of those unwritten (or written, I don't know the ins and outs of it) rules I guess for if they were injured that people then would know where to look, whereas now, its not that common a thing to do so people wouldn't instinctively look for it.

I don't even know what my blood type is =P

Donate blood and you'll find out what your blood type is. You just can't pierce or tattoo your skin for one year. It's not as long as it seems really

edit to clarify: i mean you can't get piercings or tattoos for a year before you give blood. check out blood.co.uk for the rules if your interested :)

Well, the paramedics should know the signs of low glucose and after ANY fainting spell they should check blood sugar. So they're just irresponsible. I fainted from malnutrition and exhaustion many years ago and the first thing they checked was my blood sugar (low), then blood pressure (low).

Edit to add this:

Med alert bracelets are generally crap anyways, I got thrown off a horse, broke my jaw/concussion, and my left arm with my med alert bracelet hit the ground (not the jump I fell into) on the other side of the fence, and broke off. I don't need to wear it anymore (I was on MAOI antidepressants ,which need a strict diet)

The paramedics should be able to decipher it. If they miss something as simple as low blood sugar, they don't check, and the person goes into a diabetic coma, they're idiots and should lose their licenses.

Ah ha-ha, chess. The ancient contest of wits. Two opponents: mano a mano. Braino a braino. And look: magnets for ease of travel. You could play chess on the moon.
